Professionals worldwide say being bored and needing a challenge would be the top reason for seeking a new job in 2018, according to new research from Korn Ferry.

The research, which polled nearly 5,000 professionals globally, also showed that another reason for employees seeking a new job is that the culture doesn’t fit with their values. This was followed by employees who are expecting to lose their jobs or already have.

When asked what their typical first step is when looking for a new job, 44% said networking. The majority (89%) said networking at every point in their career is key, not just when they are in job search mode.

“Networking is a contact sport and really the most critical part of a job search, but many people don’t do it well,” Gary D. Burnison, Korn Ferry CEO, said. “The best approach is to make networking a natural part of ongoing interactions with people, by focusing first on how you can help them.”

While 23% of respondents said updating their resume is their first step to landing a new role,19% said their first step is taking an inventory of what kind of job would make them the happiest.

The survey also highlights the role of the interviewer in a job search. More than half (53%) of respondents said that people who interviewed them for a job were only “somewhat prepared,” “ill-prepared” or “very ill-prepared,” and 46% said they were turned down for a job because the interviewer did not take the time to fully understand their qualifications.
