The Japanese government plans to work with major private insurers to create unemployment insurance for freelance workers, reports Nikkei Asian Review. The aim is to support the growing number of people in “unconventional” work arrangements such as freelancers. The government will develop polices in cooperation with nonlife insurers to ensure that freelancers have income between jobs or when taking time off to care for children. Individuals would also qualify for up to 50% off on premiums by joining a national freelancers’ association launched this year. Guidelines will be planned out next fiscal year while more initiatives are still being drawn up to support freelancers.
