India – Country ranks as top supplier of online labour, IT tech workers dominate online jobs

The largest supplier of online labour is India and IT professionals are dominating jobs, according to a study from the Oxford Internet Institute.
The data showed that India is home to 24% of online workers. It was closely followed by Bangladesh (16%) and the US (12%). Different countries’ workers focus on different occupations. The software development and technology category is dominated by workers from India, who command a 55% market share. This comes at a time when the IT industry has seen a slowdown in hiring and an increase in layoffs.
The Online Labour Index worker supplement is collected from four of the largest online staffing platforms: Fiverr, Freelancer, Guru, and PeoplePerHour.
Meanwhile, data from the Oxford Internet Institute also showed that the online gig economy has grown by 26% over the last year. The growth was led by the Software development and technology occupations. Growth was the fastest in Europe (excluding UK) and the slowest in India and Africa. The United States retained its position from last year as the dominant employer country, having a market share of 46%.
Staffing Industry Analysts’ latest update on the Gig Economy and Human Cloud was published in the beginning of June 2017.
