Monthly trend employment in Australia increased in December, according to figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Trend employment rose by 8,200 persons in December to 11.97 million, reflecting an increase in both full-time and part-time employment. Part-time employment increased by 1,100 persons while full-time employment rose by 7,000 persons. This was the third consecutive month of increasing full-time employment.
However, year-on-year employment growth edged up only 0.7% — less than half the average growth of 1.8% from the past 20 years.
The trend unemployment rate remained at 5.7% for the ninth consecutive month.
