Comments Off on Legislative Alert: “21st Century Postal Act” (S. 1789)

[Excerpt] On behalf of the AFL-CIO, I urge you to oppose provisions in S. 1789, the “21st Century Postal Act,” that would create severe damage to the U.S. Postal Service (“USPS*’) and its workforce. The AFL-CIO believes that the language proposed by Senators Coburn and McCain would obstruct free collective bargaining. We urge you to support efforts by Senator Mark Begich and others to modify this language so that it does not adversely affect the collective bargaining rights of the 450,000 current US Postal Service workers.

Comments Off on Legislative Alert: RAISE Act (S. 3221)

[Excerpt] On behalf of the AFL-CIO, I urge you to oppose the RAISE Act (S. 3221), a bill that would destroy the institution of collective bargaining through which companies and workers come together to negotiate the terms and conditions of employment. It is a process that has worked well to raise the living standards of millions of workers over many decades.

[Excerpt] On behalf of the AFL-CIO, I am writing to express our strong support for the Rebuild America Act (S. 2252), which sets out a vision for rebuilding our economy on stronger foundations. S. 2252 would promote broadly shared prosperity by putting America back to work, rebuilding our infrastructure, repairing our safety net, and insisting that shared sacrifice start at the top—with Wall Street and the wealthiest Americans.

Comments Off on Legislative Alert: Reconciliation Bill pursuant to the Ryan Budget (H. Con. Res. 112)

[Excerpt] On behalf of the AFL-CIO, I urge you to oppose the reconciliation bill that will be considered by the Ways and Means Committee pursuant to the House-passed Ryan budget (H.Con.Res. 112). The bill would undermine the financial security of millions of working families by imposing substantial tax penalties on people benefitting from health care premium subsidies, denying the Child Tax Credit to millions of families, and eliminating the Social Services Block Grant (SSBG). You should reject this legislation because it demands sacrifice from families of modest means while refusing to ask the wealthy to pay their fair share.

Comments Off on Legislative Alert: The Small Business Credit Availability Act (H.R. 3366)

[Excerpt] I am writing on behalf of the AFL-CIO to urge you to oppose “The Small Business Credit Availability Act” (H.R. 3336). H.R, 3336 has nothing to do with the regulation of small business. In fact, H.R. 3336 would expand loopholes in the Dodd-Frank statute and undermine comprehensive oversight of the derivatives market by our financial regulator)’ agencies.

Comments Off on Legislative Alert: Sequester Replacement Reconciliation Act of 2012 (H.R. 5652)

[Excerpt] On behalf of the AFL-CIO, I am writing to urge you to vote against the Sequester Replacement Reconciliation Act of 2012 (H.R. 5652), scheduled for House floor consideration later today. House Budget Committee Republicans assembled this package to replace the automatic spending cuts scheduled to go into effect in January 2013 as agreed to in the Budget Control Act signed into law last year. However. Republicans are using the same unbalanced approach to deficit reduction they have relied on since the beginning of the 112th Congress— refusing to ask millionaires and billionaires to pay one penny more in taxes while slashing vital services for millions of Americans,
