Initial US jobless claims fell by 1,000 last week to a new post-pandemic low of 268,000, though the previous week’s level had been revised upward by 2,000, the US Department of Labor announced today. Initial claims are nearing the March 14, 2020, level of 256,000.

In addition, the four-week moving average of jobless claims fell by 5,750 last week to reach a level of 272,750. It, too, was a new post-pandemic low. The four-week moving average had been 225,500 in the week ended March 14, 2020.

CNBC reported jobless claims were relatively little changed, indicating the pace of layoffs may have hit a plateau.
