Job postings with vaccine mandates surge

September 21, 2021 — Vaccine mandates are moving into the workplace at each individual company’s discretion before President Biden’s mandates take effect. And there is currently a huge increase in job ads requiring job seekers to be vaccinated, reports Adzuna, a search engine for job ads.

“US employers are becoming increasingly vocal about Covid-19 vaccination policies to try and attract new staff amid the talent shortage,” said Adzuna co-founder Andrew Hunter. “This includes more US companies mandating vaccination against Covid-19 for new and existing employees, particularly in front-line sectors such as healthcare and nursing and hospitality and catering, where job ads requiring a vaccine have risen sharply.”

Its data found more than 50,700 US job ads in August explicitly required job seekers to be vaccinated against Covid-19, up from 35,000 in July and just 2,300 in January. Proportionally, 0.72% of US job ads in August required job seekers to be vaccinated against Covid-19, up from 0.52% in July, and just 0.05% in January.

Healthcare and nursing was the top industry requiring vaccination at 25,500 jobs in August, followed by hospitality and catering (5,700 jobs), IT (5,100 jobs), social work (4,900 jobs) and admin (2,000 jobs).

August saw a huge surge in tech companies requiring mandatory vaccination, with the number of IT jobs requiring vaccination increasing from just a handful of job ads, to thousands.

In addition, a growing number of US employers are encouraging new and existing employees to get a Covid-19 vaccination by offering bonuses to those who do so. In August, 27,700 job ads mentioned a bonus on offer to employees who get a Covid-19 vaccine, up from 10,900 in July.

On the flip side, Adzuna has seen the start of employers saying they don’t require new employees to have a Covid-19 vaccination, as a means to compete for talent. In August, 155 job ads explicitly publicized not requiring a Covid-19 vaccination.

“Reports suggest as many as 9 million Americans may be holding back from returning to work amid concerns around the delta variant, meaning mandating vaccination is one way to reassure these potential job seekers,” Hunter said. “Other employers are taking a more flexible stance and rewarding employers who get vaccinated with a bonus, rather than requiring it. There are even some companies publicizing that they don’t require workers to be vaccinated at all as a means of attracting new staff.”

The data is based on analysis of more than 43 million job ads advertised on between January and August.
