India – Amazon India creates over 50,000 temporary seasonal roles for festive sales, Flipkart adds 30,000
Amazon India has created more than 50,000 seasonal positions across its network of fulfilment centres in the country this year ahead of the festive sale, reports the Business Standard.
Amazon’s hiring spree comes as e-commerce rival Flipkart announced that it has added 30,000 seasonal jobs in its supply chain and logistics operations, ahead of the festive sales where it will compete against Amazon.
India’s festive season marks the birth of the Elephant god, Ganpati, and celebrations climax in November with the Diwali festival of lights. Consumers typically engage in a spending spree over the period.
On the hiring of the more than 50,000 seasonal workers, Amazon India Vice President (India Customer Fulfilment) Akhil Saxena, said, “In our effort to provide a seamless shopping experience, we have enhanced our teams significantly with more than 2 times the number of seasonal associates working in the Amazon fulfilment network and customer service sites compared to the last festive season. The 50,000 seasonal associates will help us in augmenting our capabilities.”
Amazon’s seasonal positions have been created across its network of fulfilment centres, sortation centres, delivery stations and customer service sites across cities such as Mumbai, Delhi and Hyderabad.
Meanwhile, Flipkart CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy told the Financial Express, “By generating employment and enabling our sellers to scale their businesses during this time, we’re playing an important role in driving the industry and subsequently, the economy.”
E-commerce retails usually hire thousands of temporary workers in delivery and support roles to handle the high volume of orders during the festive sale.
According to data from research firm Redseer, approximately 20 million people are expected to shop on various e-commerce platforms during the festive sale next month, translating into sales of around USD 3 billion for companies like Amazon and Flipkart.
