China – Uber Rival Didi Chuxing opens US Research and Development Centre in Silicon Valley

Chinese ride-sharing app Didi Chuxing, which acquired Uber China last year, is setting up a research and development lab in Silicon Valley, California where they will focus on self-driving and Artificial Intelligence technology.

The company aims to attract top engineers to the new research and development centre.

According to the International Business Times, Didi has also partnered with a nanodegree startup called Udacity for its self-driving program, at the end of which the company, along with others will get first pick of eligible graduates to hire.

“Building on rich data and fast-evolving AI analytics, we will be working with cities and towns to build intelligent transportation ecosystems for the future,” said Cheng Wei, founder, chairman and CEO of Didi Chuxing in a press statement. “Sweeping changes are taking place in the global transport and automobile industries.”

Didi, which is backed by Apple, announced last year that it had invested in Brazilian ride-sharing firm, 99.
