The 40th annual Arab Labor Conference is taking place this week in Algiers attended by delegations from 20 Arab countries and representatives of governments, trade unions and employers. The event began Monday, April 15.

The week-long event, organized by the Arab Labor Organization (ALO), attracts more than 600 participants and 32 Arab labor organizations from 20 Arab nations.

The focus this year is on the future of employment in the light of the recent changes in the Arab world.

Discussions are centering on counter the rising unemployment rate in the Arab world, the rights of laborers and work conditions, as well as unification of labor legislative frameworks among member states.

High unemployment, especially among young people, is a key ingredient in political unrest in many Arab nations.
