On the eve of Academy Awards, Hollywood luminaries turned out in force at a party in support of the International Labour Organization’s Green Jobs Programme.

Hundreds of Hollywood celebrities and movie industry insiders attended an event to raise awareness of the International Labour Organization’s Green Jobs Programme on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, at Cecconis restaurant in West Hollywood, Calif.

Entertainment magazine Vanity Fair organized the event.

The party, entitled “Una Notte Verde” (a green night), was hosted by the film composer, Academy Award winners composer Hans Zimmer and director Ron Howard.

“I am honored to host this event for the ILO,” said Zimmer. ”What you do is real work, real work that makes a difference in the lives of so many.”

Actors Adrien Brody, Alyssa Milano and Josh Harnett and filmmaker Michael Moore, were among the 300 guests.

The focus of the event was on the green economy and the need for a sustainable future for the next generation.

From the Green Jobs Programme website:

The ILO’s Green Jobs Programme promotes a practical and coherent strategy that recognizes the strong interdependence between the need for social development and the urgency to act on climate change.

The analysis and policy guidance provided by the program contribute to the promotion of a fair globalization and the development of sustainable enterprises and economies, which are efficient, socially just and environmentally sound.

Green Jobs Defined

According to the ILO’s definition, green jobs help reduce negative environmental impact ultimately leading to environmentally, economically and socially sustainable enterprises and economies.

More precisely green jobs are decent jobs that:
  • Reduce consumption of energy and raw materials
  • Limit greenhouse gas emissions
  • Minimize waste and pollution
  • Protect and restore ecosystems

“I am thrilled to see this kind of turn-out for this event,” said Marcia Poole, ILO Director of Communication and Public Information. “It is reassuring to see the commitment here in Hollywood, to the challenge of ensuring that future generations of youth have the appropriate education, skills and ‘know-how’ to take advantage of the opportunities presented by a greener economy.”
