Malaysia’s HR Minister Datuk Richard Riot Jaem is confident that the country can achieve its targeted 35% skilled workforce by 2020, reports the New Straits Times.

“In 2015, we raised the target to 28% and in 2016, the number increased to 31%,” Riot Jaem said during the launch of a ‘Labour Market Information Data Warehouse (LMIDW)’ project. “With the increase, I’m very positive that our target can be achieved.”

The HR Ministry also added that the data warehouse project will store data on the workforce and will help ensure that the country’s unemployment rate will not reach 4%. It is currently at 3.5%, up by 0.1% from last year. “The ministry will ensure the rate will not continue to rise. This is because countries with unemployment rates of 4% and below are considered having full employment,” Riot Jaem said. He also added that the number of foreign workers in the country has fallen to 1.8 million people this year, compared to 2.1 million last year.
