The unemployment rate in New Zealand increased to a seasonally-adjusted 5.2% for the quarter ending in December 2016, an increase of 0.3% compared to the previous quarter, reports Business Insider Australia, with data from Statistics New Zealand. The increase in unemployment was driven by a surge in the size of New Zealand’s labour force. The data shows that the country’s labour force participation rate increased 0.4% over the quarter to 70.5%, the highest level on record. This means that 70.5% of the country’s population is actively looking for work or is currently in work, leading to a stronger labour market. Meanwhile, employment in the quarter grew by 0.8% while wages remained flat.
