Electronics maker Samsung terminated a labour supply firm based in Malaysia last week after it found the supplier in violation of the hiring process for migrant workers. The announcement came after media reports on working conditions of migrant workers at labour supply companies. Samsung conducted on-site investigations of the companies in Malaysia, and while one firm was terminated, others remain under investigation.
Samsung also introduced its “Samsung Migrant Worker Guidelines” to prevent future issues of this type. The guidelines were developed with advice from the organization Business for Social Responsibility.
The guidelines aim to “eradicate any existing or potential of forced or coercive labor, slave labor or human trafficking of migrant workers either at Samsung or among any of our suppliers”.
Samsung said it will continue to monitor labour supply companies.
