Qatar ended its “kafala” labour system, which critics had compared to modern day slavery, the AFP reported. The country has instead implemented a contract-based system to govern its 2.1 million foreign workers with the aim of improving the rights of the workers and increasing job flexibility. However, Amnesty International said the reforms would not “scratch the surface.”
