Southeast Asia ride-hailing, human cloud platform Grab announced Honda Motor Co. Ltd. made a strategic investment in the company and signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on various initiatives in all countries where GrabBike operates.

The companies expect to collaborate on driver education programs to promote motorbike safety, rideshare efforts in urban areas through rideshare and other technological advancements, and other initiatives.

“In the midst of the dramatic structural change of the mobility industry, the ‘sharing economy’ that is rapidly expanding all around the world has great potential to broaden the concept of mobility itself,” said Shinji Aoyama, operating officer and director of Honda. “For the collaboration with Grab, we will discuss how we can offer safer and more convenient products and services for our shared goal of resolving issues and challenges facing society in Southeast Asia.”

“We are excited to enhance the GrabBike user experience for our rapidly growing community of GrabBike drivers and riders by partnering with Honda, the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world, and create a more sustainable and efficient transport supply for Southeast Asia,” said Grab President Ming Maa. “We welcome Honda as a shareholder and key partner on innovative mobility solutions over the long term as we continue to drive Southeast Asia forward.”

Grab began as a taxi-hailing app in 2012, but has expanded its core product platform to include private cars and motorbikes. The company is testing new services such as social carpooling, as well as last mile and food deliveries. Grab currently provides services in Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.

Maa told Reuters the Honda investment is a part of the $750 million funding announced in September. “We are in the planning stages on exactly what a full partnership will look like, and there are many different prongs of that. One prong would obviously include selling Honda motorbikes within the region,” Maa said.
