Equal Pay Day 2013 Events In The U.S., Overseas And Online

The National Women’s Law Center is hosting a blog carnival all day on Equal Pay Day and a tweetchat at 1 pm (ET), with hashtag #TalkPay.

This June will mark 50 years since President Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act into law.

With women making 77 cents for every dollar a man makes,  that’s nearly $11,00 in lost wages every year.

Bloggers participating in this year’s Blog for Equal Pay are being asked to answer the question “What would you do with your $11,000 in lost wages?” Feel free to include policy analyses, personal experiences, reports, graphs, etc. in posts as well.

NWLC will collect and publish links to the blog posts by 10 am on April 9.

The Pay Equity Coalition of Minnesota will have an event at the state capitol with the lieutenant governor presenting the governor’s proclamation recognizing 30 years since full implementation of the State Employees Pay Equity Act of 1982.

This act not only achieved pay equity for the state’s largest workforce, of about 40,000 employees, but has maintained it with a built-in annual checkup. Also, this act–and one in 1984 covering all employees of cities, counties, and schools–passed on a bipartisan basis.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission will participate in a “Tweet Chat” on Tuesday, April 9 from 1-2 p.m. ET to discuss the pay gap between women and men.

The Equal Pay Tweetchat, using the hashtag #talkpay, is sponsored by the National Women’s Law Center, with these distinguished guests:

• U.S. EEOC Chair Jacqueline Berrien
• Jocelyn Samuels, Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General, Civil Rights Division, U.S. Department of Justice
• U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski (MD)
• Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-3)

During the chat, EEOC, along with other organizations, will answer questions on the issue of pay discrimination using its Twitter handle @EEOCNews.

 Equal Pay Day In Canada

The Equal Pay Coalition is declaring April 9 Equal Pay Day and is launching a province-wide campaign to close Ontario’s 28 per cent pay gap between men and women.

The Coalition has also called on the province to declare an annual Equal Pay Day, such as President Barack Obama proclaimed in the U.S., and to take measures to close the pay gap.

Several events are scheduled to mark this day, including wearing “red” to mark how far women are “in the red”.

April 9 Itinerary:

8 am: Community call to action event at the intersection of King & Bay.

10-11:45 am: Coalition members will be in Legislature for Question Period.

11:45 am: Photo op with MPPs wearing red following Question Period. Queen’s Park, outside Legislative Assembly and Room 230.

12 pm: Community call to action event at the intersection of University and College and South on University to Gerrard.

1:30pm: News conference and media briefing session at Queen’s Park Media Conference Room: Featuring the release of a report on the pay gap between men and women in Ontario, written by legal expert Mary Cornish, published by Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives-Ontario.

Equal Pay Day Goes Global

Equal Pay Day was initiated by BPW Business & Professional Women!

Women’s accounts are in the red – In the European Union, the average Gender Pay Gap is 17 % (comparison between hourly salaries).

Women above 65 are also the population most as risk of fall in poverty – as they earned less, they have also lower pensions.
