MythBusters’ Choice: DOL Worker Safety & Health App Challenge Winners

Chosen by a panel of judges that included MythBusters co-hosts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman, here’s a closer look at the U.S. Department of Labor’s winners of its Worker Safety and Health App Challenge 2013.

Prizes totaling $30,000 are being awarded to four entrants who submitted tools that best demonstrate the importance of recognizing and preventing workplace safety and health hazards. The apps were also intended to help young people understand their rights in the workplace.

Submissions were designed for Internet browsers, smartphones, feature phones and social media platforms or as native Windows or Macintosh applications.

Working Safely is No Accident

Safety in the Workplace Innovator Award — $15,000 Grand Prize Winner

Working Safely is No Accident is designed to offer workers, primarily those ages 13-24, conveniently accessible information on common workplace hazards and workers’ rights to a safe workplace.


 Worker Safety and Health App WinnerUSW Chemical SafetySafety and Health Data Award — $6,000 Prize WinnerThe USW Chemical Safety application allows users to search a Material Safety Data Sheets database for information on workplace exposure limits, health hazards, workplace controls, personal protective equipment, handling and storage and emergency procedures related to hazardous substances in the workplace.

 


 No JackWorkers’ Rights Award — $6,000 Prize WinnerNo Jack is an edgy, youth-focused website that expands the reach of the Montana State Fund’s safety and health message to a target audience of 16-24-year-old workers by educating them and their employers about workers’ rights to a safe and healthful workplace.

 


 Ergonomics iOS AppPeople’s Choice Award — $3,000 Prize WinnerErgonomics is a complete mobile workplace health solution that offers ergonomic equipment setup advice, a variety of workplace specific stretching exercises, and programmable reminders to help time breaks and prevent musculoskeletal injuries.

 

All of the safety competition’s submissions can be viewed at http://workersafetyhealth.challenge.gov. The Labor Department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration also will post links to the winning submission on its website.
